Almost every household in the United States has at least one television set. About seven hours,
on average, is spent a day watching television in each household. The news show "60 Minutes' is shown on Sunday nights and
has somewhat taken place of Sunday night church in the lives of many people. "60 Minutes" has attracted up to 26 million viewers
but averages 12 to 14 million each program. There are thousands of network affiliates around the U.S. that work alongside
major stations like ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. CBS is well known for being a pioneer into the Reality TV genre. They also own
television's number one drama right now, CSI. Each of the Big Four stations brings in millions of viewers a year and provides
great entertainment to them.

Cable television, which delivers picture by wire, has siphoned millions of viewers from television
stations that deliver programming over the air. HBO, a Time-Life subsidiary, offers movies and special events, such as championship
boxing, to local cable systems. They in turn sell the programs to subscribers willing to pay an extra fee, and thus pay-per-view is
born. HBO pioneered using a satellite to bypass the microwaves traveling the earth when it launched it Satcom 1 satellite.
Other stations that provide pay-per-view type programming are TNT and Showtime.
There are also many stations that offer around the clock news. Cable News Network, CNN for short, was the first to offer such
when Ted Turner started the company in 1980. Now there are a few more stations that have followed Turner's example:
Fox News and MSNBC.
